吸烟的危害已经谈得很多很多,吸烟的人数似乎已有所减少。正在吸烟或开始学习吸烟的人比过去少。然而,吸烟的危害毕竟不像车祸、**、地震、火山、海啸来得那么突然,让人惊恐万状。吸烟的危害总是慢性的、长期的、日积月累的,因此烟民敢于对科学家的警告置之不理、当作耳边风、依然我行我素。
如果不是因为英语试卷上有一道短文改错题谈及吸烟的危害,我也就不会想起在此老生常谈,并不厌其烦地将短文摘录于此。文中谈到:世界卫生组织估计全球每年死于与吸烟有关的疾病人数差不多有500多万人。世界卫生组织官员说,如果不采取控制措施,估计到2020年会超过800万人。2020即将到来,也会转眼即逝。美国曾有4600万烟民,美国健康专家估计有数十万人死于与吸烟有关的疾病。

For many years, scientists have warned that smoking tobacco does much harm to your health. Yet people around the world continue to smoke. The World Health Organization estimates that almost five million people around the world die each year from the effects of smoking.That number is increasing.The WHO officials say tobacco use will kill over eight million people a year by 2020 if nothing is done to control the problem.
In the United States,more than forty-six million adults currently smoke. American health experts say tobacco use is the leading predictable cause of death in America. This year, an estimated four hundred forty thousand Americans will die of diseases linked to smoking.
